The History and Meaning Behind Birthstones
Birthstones are gems associated with the month that a person was born. The concept of birthstones originated in the first century; Aaron’s breastplate, which contained twelve gemstones, made from specific minerals, none of them the same as another, and each of them representative of a particular tribe, whose name was to be inscribed on the stone.
Later, these twelve stones linked to the twelve signs of the zodiac. Eventually, they also became associated with the twelve months of the calendar year. It was believed to be a connection between the twelve stones in the priestly breastplate, the twelve months of the year, and the zodiac signs.
Many cultures have believed that birthstones have magical healing powers or bring good luck.
The translations and interpretations of birthstones have varied over the years, but wearing a single birthstone is only a few centuries old. In 1912, to standardize birthstones, the Jewelers of America met and officially adopted the list, as we know it today.
